What exactly is a Demat Account?

Just as your money sits in digital form in a bank account, your shares sit in digital form in a Demat account. “Demat” means Dematerialised — an electronic record in place of physical paper certificates.

In the past, share certificates were issued on paper — there was a risk of them getting lost, torn, or transfers taking months. Today everything is digital, safe, and instant.

To invest in the market you need two things — a Demat account (to hold shares) and a Trading account (to buy/sell). Most brokers open both together.

“A Demat account isn’t an investment by itself — it’s just a locker where your shares are kept.”
Demat vs Trading Account
Demat AccountThe shares you’ve bought are stored here in digital form — like a locker.
Trading AccountYou place your buy and sell orders through this — it’s your connection to the market.
Bank AccountYour existing bank account is linked to this — money moves in and out from here.

FAQ

Common questions

What people ask most often about Demat accounts.

Most brokers today offer free account opening. Some brokers charge an annual maintenance charge (AMC), typically between ₹200–₹500 — some don't even charge that. Exact charges vary by broker, so be sure to read their official fee list before applying.

If your documents are correct and your Aadhaar is linked to your mobile, the online application takes only 15–20 minutes to complete. After verification, the account is usually active within 24–48 hours. Sometimes verification can take a bit longer.

No — you always open the account yourself on the broker's official website or app. We only provide guidance: what the process is, which documents you'll need, and what to watch out for. We never ask you for documents or login details.

We don't endorse any one broker. Every broker has its own charges, features, and app experience. We teach you how to compare — looking at brokerage, AMC, app quality, and customer support. The final decision is yours.

No, there's no requirement to maintain a minimum balance in a Demat account. You can open the account and leave it empty. When you're ready to invest, add just enough money for the shares you want to buy — even if it's just ₹500.

Not at all. The two are separate — you can just take the guidance, or just join the class, or both. Though we'd recommend understanding the basics first before investing — so joining the free class would be worthwhile.
